REGINA – A growing petition is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to reassess the sudden removal of Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore as commanding officer of the RCMP’s “F” Division in Saskatchewan.
The decision, made earlier this month by RCMP National Headquarters, followed anonymous complaints against Blackmore. The move has sparked backlash among officers and community members, with many expressing frustration over the lack of transparency.
The petition, circulating among RCMP members and supporters, says, “The recent decision by the senior executive team at National Headquarters regarding the dismissal of Commanding Officer Rhonda Blackmore has deeply affected many members of our force and the broader community. Feelings of frustration, disappointment, and concern are widespread.”
In protest, the petition calls on RCMP members to remove gender identifiers in their HR records by selecting “Prefer not to answer.” It also encourages Indigenous, visible minority, and disabled officers to revoke consent for their demographic data to be used in HR reporting.
Blackmore, a 30-year veteran, took command of Saskatchewan RCMP in April 2021. Known for her advocacy for officer wellness, she was appointed the RCMP’s first National Fitness Champion in August 2024, spearheading initiatives to promote health and resilience within the force.
A newly launched website, “I Stand With Her,” argues that her removal came at a critical time amid Saskatchewan’s wildfire crisis and just before peak call volume season. The site warns that the decision could further strain RCMP retention and recruitment efforts, as provinces increasingly consider replacing the federal force with their own police services.
"The Force is struggling to retain experienced officers, recruit new cadets and Provinces across the Country are looking for reasons to keep the RCMP over breaking free from Ottawa's control and starting their own Provincial Police,” the site states. “This poor treatment of a cherished leader doesn't help.”
Saskatchewan residents have rallied behind Blackmore, leaving messages of support on the petition’s website.
Carol from Regina posted, “I am disappointed in the manner in which A/Comm. Blackmore has been sidelined. I am retired RCMP Veteran and have seen many commanding officers, come and go. None have supported "F" Div. in the professional manner, from my time in "F" Div. that I have witnessed regarding A/Comm Blackmore”
Penny from Shellbrook said, “I want answers. I believe in Rhonda and what she stood for in F Div. She was our voice, our support and our advocate.”
And Paul posted, “Ma’am, you are the greatest Leader we have ever had. I hope you can return to “F” Division.”
