REGINA  — The North Central Family Centre (NCFC) hosted an annual walk on Saturday to honour and remember the legacy of its co-founder, Ivan Amichand.

Among the dozens of people participating in the event were Ivan’s sons, Jo-Jo and Will.

Will recalled the person his father was and his efforts to improve the community.

“He was such a selfless person. He was always giving to others and providing for people in the community.”

Jo-Jo echoed Will’s words, saying his father “poured his heart and soul into the community.”

The NCFC was founded in 2002 by Ivan and Sandy Wankel.

After Ivan passed away in 2013, Wankel decided to change an annual crime prevention event to a walk in honour of  Ivan.

“This event is a chance to honour a really amazing man and celebrate families in the community,” said Wankel.

Wankel described Ivan as someone who always gave back and instilled that mindset into the community.

Part of the walk also promoted wellness, unity, and safety.

“We have to ensure children have a safe place to grow and are empowered to reach their full potential,” said Wankel.

Events like a walk can “build up a trust [and] relationship with a community where you can really help people,” she added.

As for the brothers, they hope the North Central community will continue to honour their father.

“He was truly a pillar here, and it’s nice to see they still remember him,“ said Will.
