It’s expected 700 participants from across North America will be in the 2028 Can-Am Police Fire-Games.

REGINA — The City of Regina is looking into contributing funding towards the 2028 Can-Am Police Fire-Games.

The games are held every four years at different locations across Canada. In 2024, it was announced Regina was selected as the host for the 2028 games.

City administration recommended Regina invest upwards of $200,000 to cover associated costs related to the game.

Jennifer Johnson, deputy city manager of communications, Service Regina & Tourism, said the city typically has meetings with event organizers on bidding offers to secure hosting of an event.

“If we announce our bid amounts before winning, then other cities can outbid us.”

The money would come from Regina’s events, conventions and tradeshows (ECT) reserve fund, which had a balance of roughly $555,000 at the end of 2024.

The ECT is also being used for the 2025 Vanier Cup.

Regina will see a massive return on investment by supporting the 2028 Can-Am Police Fire-Games, as the local economy could see an upwards of $20 million boost during the event.

Calculations from Tourism Saskatchewan also estimate roughly $3.3 million worth of direct business sales.

It’s expected 700 participants from across North America will be in the 2028 Can-Am Police Fire-Games.

From these numbers,  Tourism Saskatchewan expects 4,000 hotel rooms to be booked by participants, friends, and family.

Final approval of the upwards of $200,000 contribution will be decided at next week's city council meeting.

The games will begin in August 2028.
