REGINA — Souls Harbour Rescue Mission hosted a barbecue Thursday to commemorate its anniversary.
The group has been in Regina for 35 years now, offering services from meals, a free clothing store, a men’s shelter, women’s addiction spaces, affordable housing units, and more.
“Today is our way of saying thank you to the community for helping us be part of the area for 35 years,” said Kathy Ingram, Souls Harbour Rescue Mission director of finance and development.
Ingram said their feats of providing 3 million meals, 1 million clothing items, 100,000 nights of emergency shelter and more are thanks to the support of the public.
Ingram also mentioned the importance of public support, as donations have decreased. Additionally, the organization estimates $100,000 was lost from cheques never received due to last year’s Canada Post strike.
“Will never be able to recoup that lost money,” said Ingram.
Despite the loss of money, Souls Harbour Rescue Mission is looking ahead to continue furthering its outreach.
“One of the things that we're looking at down the road is a men's addiction recovery,” said Ingram.
She acknowledged the current addiction problem happening in the city.
As for the barbecue, Ingram said they would be serving 400 people hot dogs, chips and pop from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission garage, next to their clothing store.
