REGINA — The Regina Farmers’ Market (RFM) and YWCA Regina have teamed up to launch the RFM Nutrition Coupon Program.
This new initiative aims to increase low-income families' or individuals' access to fresh, local food, per a press release.
The 14-week program runs from July 7 to Oct. 11, helping participants stretch their food budgets while building community and supporting Saskatchewan’s local food producers.
Any eligible participants will be identified by the YWCA Regina and will receive weekly vouchers valued at $20 for an individual and $60 per family.
These vouchers can be used at RFM vendors selling fresh produce or pantry staples.
The RFM operates at Victoria Park in Downtown Regina on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at Confederation Park located in the REAL District on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We know that many individuals and families in Regina are facing food insecurity, and this program is one way we can help,” said Holly Laird, executive director of the RFM.
“It’s about more than just food. The RFM Nutrition Coupon Program helps people access fresh, local ingredients and build real connections with their community and the people who produce their food. The program will support our local economy, celebrate food culture, and make the farmers’ market a more inclusive space for everyone.”
Local community members who regularly access YWCA Regina’s Community Support Hub are excited for this new program.
”I'm looking forward to taking my sons on a stroll through the farmers' market and exploring all the vendors and what they have to offer. I'm very thankful for the program and the vouchers made available to my family. This program gives us something to look forward to,” said community member Leigh K.
A voucher functions like cash and is valid throughout the week to purchase fresh and preserved food.
These vouchers aren't eligible for food trucks, alcohol or artisan products.
As for unclaimed coupons, they will be converted by FRM into fresh produce every Saturday and donated to the YWCA Regina.
According to the RFM, this program is the first of its kind in Saskatchewan. However, similar initiatives have been implemented in B.C, Manitoba and Nova Scotia.
The press release notes increased costs for food and the rise of food insecurity, which this program will help combat.
Anyone interested in helping the program with donations is encouraged to check out RFM’s website.
