Winners announced for Regina International Film Festival and Awards

Awards ceremony held Saturday night honouring excellence during Regina’s film festival.

REGINA - This weekend marked the official wrap-up to the 2025 Regina International Film Festival and Awards.

This was the tenth anniversary of the event, which ran Aug. 13 to 23. It began with virtual screenings Aug. 13 to 18 and was followed by in-person events Aug. 19 to 23 which included screenings, networking events and pitch events to pitch projects to industry professionals.

Events during the week included the panel discussion on The Future of Video Games at the Mackenzie Art Gallery, as well as a Screenwriter Pitch Event and broadcaster one on ones. 

The week culminated with the awards ceremony at Darke Hall on Saturday night — a red carpet affair to honour the best films to screen at the film festival this year. 

Here is a look at this year’s winners: 

Animated Short Film - Anomaly, a film by Arturs Voblikovs making its North American premiere, from the UK and Latvia. Other nominees were The Light in the Dark, Christopher & the Bug, and HOLY HEAVÊNESS (Vazne Moghaddas).

Canadian Feature - Neon Dreaming, directed by Marie-Claire Marcotte. Other nominees were Okurimono, and All Eyes on Me.

Canadian Short - Brotherly, directed by Gavin Seal. Other nominees were The Human Under the Bed, The Table Between Us, Hiko, and Salem on the Road.

Documentary Feature - Toroboro: The Name of The Plants, from Brazil - Ecuador and directed by Manolo Sarmiento. It made its North American premiere at the festival. Other nominees were Farming the Revolution, Letter to My Tribe, Rule of Stone and Seeing Through the Darkness.

Documentary Shorts - Burcu’s Angels, a Canadian production directed by Özgün Gündüz making its Saskatchewan premiere. Other nominees were A Big Adventure and Moon Belly.

Indigenous Short Film - Uasheshkun, directed by Normand Junior Thirnish-Pilot in the Innu language and also making its Saskatchewan premiere. Other nominees were Shaping Our Future, Ukko, Gods and Devils, and Anotc ota ickwaparin akosiin.

International Feature - The Things You Kill, directed by Alireza Khatami and a Canada-Poland entry. Other nominees are Tell the wind too (Be Baad Ham Begou), Soft Leaves and Violent Butterflies.

International Short Film - Land of the Dead Deer, from Iran, directed by Anahita Qarcheh / Soroush Javadzadeh and making its Canadian premiere at the festival. Other nominees were Black Cotton and Moving.

Saskatchewan Short Film - daytoday, directed by Mark Wihak and making its world premiere. Other nominees are Excalibur, Gymnastics, Driver’s Licence and Disconnect.

Student Short Film - No Time (Zeitlos), from Germany, directed by Nadiia Khatymlianska. Other nominees were As I Witness, Trains passing by, and AURA.
