SASKATCHEWAN - Many consumers are responding to recent food inflation by preserving their own food, according to a recent Western Producer story featured on SASKTODAY.

We are featuring some preserve recipes, that just might get added to your repertoire.

Bread & Butter Pickles

1 gallon cucumbers sliced fine with peels (about 10 - large cucumbers per batch)

8 small onions sliced

½ cup pickling salt

 

Mix with water and let stand over cucumbers for about 3 hours.

Drain and then add:     5 cups sugar

4 cups vinegar

2 tbsp mustard seed

2 tbsp celery seed

1 ½ tsp turmeric

½ tsp ground cloves

1 tsp ginger

2 cups boiling water

Bring to a boil and pour into sterile jars and seal while hot.
