SASKATOON — A person has been sent to hospital Wednesday with injuries after their legs were reportedly run over by a garbage truck in an alley behind the 800 block of 20th Street West that runs between Avenue I South and Avenue H South.
Members of the Saskatoon Police Service's Collision Analyst Unit are investigating. Police say impairment is not believed to be a factor in this incident and no charges have been laid.
According to the City of Saskatoon, the incident happened around 10 a.m. Wednesday.
“Our thoughts are with this individual and their loved ones right now,” says Angela Gardiner, General Manager of Utilities and Environment.
The city explained in a release that the alley in this location is configured with a 90-degree sharp turn to the left. The city says that initial information is that an individual was lying to the side of the laneway near the left corner of the turn, near a power box and not visible to the truck operator. Garbage trucks have a right-hand driver’s seat and steering wheel to allow the operator a better view for collecting and tipping bins on the right-hand side of the truck.
Police say they determined that a City of Saskatoon garbage truck had been conducting its routine pickup when the operator was notified by a bystander that he had just run over the legs of a man lying in the alley. The operator stopped the truck and remained at the scene. Members of the Collision Analyst Unit were called to investigate and found that the driver was negotiating a left turn to proceed northbound in the alley when the incident occurred.
There is no information on why the man was lying in the alley.
