SASKATOON—A HAZMAT crew of the Saskatoon Fire Department helped respond to a small fire on Friday, Aug. 8, in the 1100 block of 17th Street West.

Responding firefighters saw light smoke coming from a building, which was caused by a lithium battery. The incident was reported at 4:17 p.m.

Fire crews charged hose lines when they entered the building, where they saw the burning lithium battery. The building was fully evacuated before the firefighter arrived.

The burning area where the battery was found was completely extinguished, and the lithium battery was removed from the structure. SFD is expected to dispose of the lithium battery.

Crews set up fans to ventilate the building, while HAZMAT was called on the scene to make sure no other hazards were left behind, including hazardous chemicals and other materials.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters, and the scene was turned over to a fire investigator to identify the cause, origin and damage estimate of the fire.
