SASKATOON — The Prairie Ukrainian Film Festival (PUFF) is back for its third year, bringing seven powerful, poignant and playful Ukrainian films to Saskatoon from June 12 to 15.

Presented at Remai Modern and the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, PUFF 2025 invites audiences to immerse themselves in the bold spirit of Ukrainian cinema — and the lives and landscapes that inspire it.

Curated by Dr. Nadya Foty-Oneschuk of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage at St. Thomas More College, this year’s festival features a lineup of films that celebrate the resilience, complexity and creativity of Ukraine today.

Highlights include:

  • Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965) – a visually stunning classic that helped define Ukrainian cinema
  • Malevych (2024) – an exploration of the famed artist’s life and politics
  • The Dragon Spell (2016) – a beloved feature-length animated film for kids and families
  • Porcelain War (2024) – a gripping documentary about art and resistance during wartime - nominated for the 2025 Academy Award
  • Ukrainian Dance Movie (2024) – this short film is a joyful celebration of Ukrainian dance, followed by a panel discussion with dancers, choreographers, and artists to discuss Ukrainian performing arts in the diaspora as a form of cultural resistance.
