Update: SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department has concluded its investigation into an early morning blaze that damaged an apartment complex in the 400 block of Fairmont Drive on August 19.

Investigators determined the fire originated on a balcony and was caused by the improper disposal of smoking material.

In its release, the department reminded residents to use safe methods when discarding cigarette butts.

"Saskatoon Fire Department wants to remind everyone to use an appropriate receptacle to discard cigarette butts such as a sealed jar with water inside. Ashtrays, plastic containers and metal cans are known to catch fire, melt or allow butts to be blown out and start combustible material on fire."

Original report: Firefighters responded to a blaze in an apartment building in the 400 block of Fairmont Drive early Tuesday morning.

At 3:31 a.m. on Aug. 19, the Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre received multiple 911 calls reporting the fire. Three engines, one rescue unit, one ladder truck and the Battalion Chief were dispatched.

Crews arrived at 3:36 a.m. and reported flames showing from the second floor of a three-storey apartment complex. Additional resources were called in as the fire began moving toward the roof and attic space. Utilities were shut down for safety at the scene.

The fire was brought under control at 4:24 a.m. and fully extinguished by 4:39 a.m. Fire crews were gradually released and the scene was handed over to an investigator at 6:22 a.m.

No injuries were reported among firefighters or civilians. Two suites sustained fire damage, displacing four people who have since been relocated and rehoused by the property owner. All other occupants will be able to return to their units.

Officials estimate the damage at approximately $200,000. The fire alarm system is being serviced, and some smoke alarms are being replaced.

A fire investigation is underway. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
