The Wilcock family waits at the starting line at the annual Hayley and Cayden Mother’s Day Run, held at the Hayley and Cayden Memorial Park.

ASSINIBOIA - The annual Hayley and Cayden’s Mother ‘s Day Run is set for Sunday, May 14 in Assiniboia. This memorial run was started in 2014 and has continued annually since, excluding the years impacted by COVID-19.

The Hayley and Cayden Mother’s Day Run was started in remembrance of Hayley and Cayden. They tragically lost their lives to intimate partner violence in 2012.

The purpose of the run is to bring awareness to Hayley and Cayden’s situation, but most importantly to remember them and all the amazing things Hayley had done for not only our community, but our province.

Hayley Wilcock was born and raised in Assiniboia. During her years in Assiniboia, Hayley was a natural born leader and immersed herself in many things in and around Assiniboia. She had a passion for learning, helping others in her community, and being active.

Hayley was a humanitarian, through and through. Even while in University full time, she continued to volunteer anywhere she could.

During her time at the University of Saskatchewan, Hayley was instrumental in bringing the Kinsmen Club to the University and became their chartered President.

Hayley also volunteered her time to the city of Saskatoon, she worked provincially with Saskatchewan, and internationally by volunteering in several communities in Africa as well as in Nepal through the “Volunteers Abroad” program.

Hayley’s biggest pride and joy in her life was her son, Cayden. In Cayden’s short two years, he had mirrored his mother’s leadership skills and love for others from a very young age.

He was a light in Hayley’s and her famiy’s lives, and her love for him was endless. Those who knew Cayden have said that he was a burst of sunshine, with a sweet smile and contagious laugh that could warm any heart he touched.

Since 2014, this initiative has raised over $67,000 including a yearly Assiniboia Composite High School Hayley and Cayden Memorial Fund Scholarship and for various organizations including the Moose Jaw Transition House, Jim Patterson Children’s Hospital, Assiniboia Civic Improvement Association, STARS, Telemiracle and the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan.

This year will mark the seventh run, and all proceeds will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon, which helps families who have sick children stay close to critical care they need.

This three-km, five-km, and 10km walk/run is a fun and rewarding event that draws many participants and volunteers of all ages and provides a sense of purpose and positivity for those who knew Hayley and Cayden.

Residents who are interested in participating or donating to this year’s run can register online at www.runningroom.com  or you can register on Saturday, May 13 at the Prince of Wales Centre from from 5 to 6:30 p.m., or the morning of the run on May 14 before 8:30 a.m.
