Dance Nation competition hosted by Giselle’s Showtyme Dance

Giselle’s Showtyme Dance students were very successful in the Dance Nation competition and won many awards.

ASSINIBOIA -  Dance Nation, the invitational dance competition, was hosted by Giselle’s Showtyme Dance at the Prince of Wales Centre. This year marked the 14th year for the Dance Nation competition, and the second year hosted in Assiniboia. The competition ran from April 14 to 16 and had over 300 dancers attend and compete this year.

The Dance Nation adjudicator was Jolenne Bradley, who is from Barrie, Ontario and owns her own Dance Studio, Barrie Dance Conservatory. This year marks her 20th year of operation for her dance studio, but has many years prior in Dance Education. Throughout her career, Jolenne has had many achievements and awards and has worked alongside many dance teachers, making her the perfect fit for the adjudicator role.

Giselle’s Showtyme Dance students were very successful in the Dance Nation competition and won many awards, showcasing Assiniboia’s talent and dedication very well.

Local student awards were as follows: Top Mini/Junior Soloist: Nora Wilson first, Anna Bumbac second, Maisey Rhodes third. Top Inter/Senior Soloist: Michaela Bumbac first, Addison Nagel third.

Beginner/Novice Hip Hop Solo: Anna Bumbac. Beginner/Novice Acro Solo: Sofia Lozada. Pre-Competitive/Competitive Acro Solo: Michaela Bumbac. Musical Theater/Song and Dance Solo: Addison Nagel.

Competitive Tap Group: (GSD) Human. Beginner Jazz Group: (GSD) Cartoon Heroes. Precompetitive Jr. Jazz Small Group: (GSD) Cops and Robbers.  Competitive Jazz Group: (GSD) Spiderman. Precompetitive Lyrical Group: (GSD) Hold Onto Me. Competitive Lyrical Group: (GSD) Red Run Cold. Beginner/Novice Acro Group: (GSD) Ghostbusters. Musical Theatre/Song and Dance Group: (GSD) Villians. Rising Star Scholarship: Hope Olson.

Dance Nation held a “Dance Off”, which was a new feature this year. This was a competition between studios where Scholarships to Dance Disney in Florida were up for grabs.

Along with the adjudicator, Jolenne, three other local’s were selected to judge the Dance Off. Winners of this Dance Off and the top three soloists mentioned above received scholarships. The first place top soloists (Nora Wilson and Michaela Bumbac) received $1,000, and the first place group mentioned below won $750 per group member to attend Dance Disney. Second and third place winners were also eligible to attend Dance Disney. Five studios participated in the Dance Off this year and the group winners were as follows:

Mini Junior Group Division: Cops and Robbers by GSD Studio – first, The Dollhouse by The Dance Studio of Swift Current – second, You Should Be Dancin’ by Pangman Dance Club – third.

Inter Senior Group Division: Grease by Dance Invasion – first, Spiderman by GSD Studio – second, High School Musical by Pangman Dance Club – third.

Giselle’s Showtyme Dance also participated in the Phoenix Dance Competition in Regina in April and won “The Pit” dance off with their routine, Human. This was a huge accomplishment for the GSD Studio students, and they are heading off to nationals in Penticton, B.C. in July.
