Mural is painted in downtown Assiniboia to honour ‘prairie soul’

The hummingbird in the piece is dedicated to the life and the family of Katie Daschuk

ASSINIBOIA - The beautiful artwork of artisan Stephanie Bellefleur brightens the landscape of downtown Assiniboia. The message of this mural carries both the stories of past, present and future of the community.

According to a Facebook post by the artist, “the present is timeliness, may we honour it and live, love and laugh with peace and serenity with the essence of life through our prairie soul.”

The hummingbird in the piece is dedicated to the life and the family of Katie Daschuk. Katie’s eyes were used in reference for the mural, with much love.

The spirit of the hummingbird brings both mystical and spiritual reminder of a deep connection with respect to the Indigenous, Assiniboine, Lakota and Metis people of the land. As it flies, with its infinity wing patterns, there is a lot of grace to the hummingbird.

“We are thankful for what both the earth and spirit provides for us, ever so effortlessly to which is complete within a wholistic practice of balance.”

A bridge to the land’s ancestors is shared in the image of the wheat, lily and sage seeds. It is a grand acknowledgement to the medicine wheel through sacred directions. It is a time to reconfirm and reconcile, as the community comes together again and again, to infinity and forever.

Bellefleur also made special mention on her Facebook post of the support from Kerri Martin, admin assistant of the Town of Assiniboia, and other residents that made her mural project possible.
