A regular meeting of the Weyburn City Council was held on March 28; here are the major points of interest:

*Council approved a list of projects for the 2011 Local Improvement Program, including asphalt recapping, sidewalk replacement and one street to be paved. The estimated cost of the projects is just under $800,000 with an estimated City share of $341,291 and affected property owners share of $457,842.

*Council received some opposition to the locating of three new Ready-to-move (RTM) homes within the city. Len Peters of New Ventures Investments submitted three applications seeking approval to locate the RTMs with two-car attached garages to 800, 804 and 808 Johnston Drive.

The application received a letter of objection from resident Mike Bloor, who said that his concern stems from how previous RTMs were allowed to be developed, with obstacles such as multiple renters with several vehicles parked on the street and in yards and a lack of landscaping.

"The renters don't care about looking after the property," said Bloor. "Can we do something about renters? They're parking on the lawn, plus it's still a very busy area."

Manager of Community Services Doug Mulhall said that he did not think that the City had the power to legislate whether a building was rented or not. "Even if we tried to, some are building homes for investment purposes," said Mulhall.

Mulhall noted that the City has issued orders to previous RTMs at issue to clean up their lots and plant them.

In regards to parking, Councillor Andrew Broccolo said that it may be up to neighbours to contact police about illegal parking issues.
