City woman sentenced for disposal of body of baby

A 33-year-old Weyburn woman, Angela M.

A 33-year-old Weyburn woman, Angela M. Vermeulen, was given a 60-day conditional sentence with electronic monitoring and 18 months probation in Court of Queen's Bench in Weyburn, as her sentence for pleading guilty to the charge of disposal of the body of a child.

The case arose one year ago when an investigation was launched after a visitor to Vermeulen's home reported seeing the body of an infant in her garbage. When the police went to investigate, they believe the bag was taken to a garbage bin nearby, which may have been emptied at the city landfill. The baby's body was never found, despite of extensive searching at the landfill, including use of a cadaver dog.

She was originally also charged with offering an indignity to a human body, but this charge was stayed at the time of her preliminary hearing last October.

Some of the conditions of Vermeulen's sentence includes that she must abstain from the use of alcohol or non-prescription drugs, and must provide a sample of her breath or urine upon demand; she is prohibited from using a weapon, and she is to take counselling as directed by her probation officer.

If she becomes pregnant during her probation period, she is to report this to her supervisor and doctor immediately, and she may be required to provide pregnancy tests during her probation time.

Vermeulen is also to perform 50 hours of community service within the first nine months of her probation order.
