Credit Union accepting funds for Hurricane Sandy

The Weyburn Credit Union, along with credit unions across Saskatchewan, are responding to the devastation caused to families by Hurricane Sandy in the United States and the Caribbean.

Hurricane Sandy has caused damage across 10 states and six countries, and has left 300,000 people in the Caribbean homeless.

The Weyburn Credit Union is a depot for the Canadian Red Cross and all donations will go directly to the Red Cross' Hurricane Sandy efforts.

"Anyone that wants to donate to provide relief funding for those affected by Hurricane Sandy can do so at Weyburn Credit Union," said Mel Hoffman of the Weyburn Credit Union.

"Any of the tellers would be able to accept any donation and then we record the amount, name and address and all that is remitted to the Canadian Red Cross, and the receipt information comes from them."

The Red Cross' response to the disaster was immediate. Volunteers in each country mobilized to provide life-saving shelter, food and potable water to communities displaced by the storm. In the United States 23,000 Red Cross volunteers and staff are assisting those in need.

Funds can be given specifically to either the Caribbean "Hurricane 2012" fund, or money can be donated to the United States "Hurricane Sandy-USA" fund.

The Red Cross encourages Canadians to donate online at www.redcross.ca/helpnow, or call toll-free.

Donations will be accepted at the Credit Union from Nov. 7 to Dec. 7.
