A cyclist from Toronto was killed after being struck by two vehicles on Highway 39 on Oct. 13.
The 25-year-old was travelling westbound at about 7:05 p.m. when he was hit by a semi truck that was also heading west. Estevan Police Service arrived first but were soon joined by RCMP members who took control of the scene. The name of the deceased is not being released as there has been some difficulty notifying family members in Toronto.
A collision analyst was on the scene for a few hours and determined the cyclist was struck by the semi, and then thrown into oncoming traffic where he was struck again by a pickup heading east.
Estevan RCMP Sergeant Darryl Milo said there are no charges expected. He noted there was no alcohol or reckless driving that factored in, and that it appeared that the cyclist, who was dressed in all black, moved into the path of the semi and was hit near the centre line.
Milo said the man was staying at the Super 6, and may have been turning into the motel's lot. He added that the bicycle didn't have any lights on it.
The darkness and rain were factors in the accident, and Milo said the cyclist was probably not paying attention when he turned left.
EPS blocked off access to that portion of the highway until about 10:30 p.m. when the accident was cleaned up. There was no damage reported to the vehicles.
