MLA House Speaker Dan D'Autremont, NHL Legend Lanny McDonald, and CFL Great Rocco Romano Arrive just Ahead of Gr.10-12 Finals
Last week, Carson Energy brought Lanny McDonald and Rocco Romano to our school to talk to the students about determination, pursuing one's dreams, and how to treat others. Lanny McDonald also passed around his Stanley Cup ring and shared tales of playing for the Leafs and the Flames. Hall of Famer Rocco Romano talked about CFL football and shared his experiences playing for the Stampeders. Still, we know that secretly he cheers for the Riders. The 2 hockey and football legends then answered students' questions and signed autographs.
Mr. Birch's Grade 10 Social Studies students also had MLA and House Speaker, the Hon. Dan D'Autremont, attend their class last week. Mr. Birch had taken his class to the Legislative Building in Regina earlier in the fall to find out more about government in Saskatchewan. Mr. D'Autremont talked to the class that day and then returned to G.F. Kells last week to take part in a class activity. This was a wonderful experience for the Grade 10 class. Thank you to Mr. D'Autremont for spending time with our students.
The Semester 1 Final Exams will be written from Wednesday, January 23rd, to Friday, January 25th, 2013, for students in Grades 10 to 12. On Wed. morning, the Grade 10's write Math, the Grade 11's write Social and the Grade 12's write ELA 30. On Thurs. morning the Grade 10's write Social, and the Grade 11's and the Grade 12's write Physics 20. On Thurs. afternoon, the Grade 11's write Biology, and the Grade 12's write Social. On Fri. morning, the Grade 10's write ELA 10, the Grade 11's write Math, and the Grade 12's write Math. Semester 2 Report Cards will be going out the first week of February. Please look for them! There will be no school on Monday, January 28th, due to a teacher Professional Development Day. The first day of classes for Semester 2 is Tuesday, January 29.
Interested students from G.F. Kells will be heading to Asessippi Ski Resort on Friday, February 15, 2013. Friday, January 25th, 2013, is the last day to get ski trip forms handed in for this trip. Students can choose to ski, snowboard, or tube. Don't miss out on an enjoyable and fun day at one of the best ski resorts on the prairies, Asessippi.
Junior drama practices continue every Thursday after school from 3:30pm to 5:00pm from now until April. Senior drama practices are every Monday evening from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Curling practices are Tuesday and Thursday after school. Curling playoffs are coming up in February.
The Search Institute has identified the building blocks of healthy development that help young people grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. The Cougar Corner will list 2 of these 40 Developmental Assets each week for the next 20 weeks. One of these assets is "Reading for Pleasure." Another asset is "Caring" and placing a high value on helping people.
