Mayor Debra Button (centre) met with Mayors Natalia Zbarashenko, settlement of Grebinka, and Natalia Musienko, town of Vilnyansk during her trip to the Ukraine from December 6 to 15.

Weyburn's mayor recently returned from a trip that was brought about by her position on a national board. Mayor Debra Button was sent to the Ukraine by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) in order to discuss economic development and increase women's roles in local government.

"I spent the day with other women mayors," said Button. "Through translators we discussed common elements of women in politics."

Button said that she had much in common with the Ukrainian women, such as the challenges of juggling work and family-life.

Button gave two presentations about the city of Weyburn during her trip. She also had the opportunity to visit an orphanage and deliver presents, care of several members of the community.

"Everyone got a new hoodie," said Button of the orphans. She also delivered much needed hygiene products and several treats for the children.

"It really got me into the Christmas spirit."

Because of her role with FCM, the City of Weyburn is benefitting too. Weyburn will host a Ukrainian delegation on January 24 that is interested in developing programs at the Southeast Regional College that meet the needs of Ukrainians wanting to immigrate to Canada.

The delegation will also speak to prominent members of the oil and gas community and the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce. They will take part in a City Council meeting during their trip before heading to the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) convention in Saskatoon and then to Ottawa where Button will host an FCM convention.
