The annual Mental Health Week is approaching and the Weyburn branch of Canadian Mental Health is preparing for this recurring event by reminding residents that mental health is everyone's business with this year's theme "Mental Health for All."

Mental Health Week will begin with a proclamation by Mayor Debra Button on Monday, May 2.The annual Mayor's Luncheon will take place at McKenna Hall on Tuesday, May 3, with David Nelson as the guest speaker. Nelson is the executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). Previously he worked as program director with CMHA Regina branch and executive director of the Autism Resource Centre in Regina. A registered social worker and a registered psychiatric nurse, Nelson has over 35 years experience working in the mental health field.

In Canada, mental illness is the second leading cause of human disability and premature death. One in five people will develop a mental illness in their lifetime. This is why it is important to continue fighting the stigma which is attached to mental illness.

When people acknowledge that they or their loved one may have a mental illness, they can take the appropriate steps to get help before it is too late. Everyone has a responsibility to speak up and acknowledge that mental illness can affect anyone at any time.

The Weyburn CMHA would like to invite the public to this event. Tickets are $20 each or $150 for a table of eight and are available at the Weyburn CMHA branch.
