New refuse system for the New Year

The City of Weyburn will roll out the new automated refuse carts in the New Year. The delivery of the new carts will begin on January 17, 2011, not January 3 as was originally predicted.

The City of Weyburn will roll out the new automated refuse carts in the New Year.

The delivery of the new carts will begin on January 17, 2011, not January 3 as was originally predicted. City Engineering Assistant Jesse Watamanuk said that this date has been chosen to allow the City, residents and contractors more time to prepare for this transition.

Watamanuk said that the pushed back date should allow residents sufficient time to clear a space for their cart. He warned that carts cannot be placed in snow banks and that they must be placed beside or in front of the snow.

"It doesn't have to be on a perfectly flat surface, it can be on top of a snow-pack," said Watamanuk.

He said that the City is still working on bylaws for the new system, such as the period of time that it may sit in front of a residence.

Watamanuk said that the new system will be less messy as garbage bags will not be piled in front of homes on refuse pick-up day and it will also be safer for City employees.

"Recently, one of our workers got jabbed with a needle - it was an insulin needle, but still scary," said Watamanuk.

Watamanuk said that residents should pay attention to where the carts are placed when they are delivered and after a few scheduled pick-ups - this will be the ideal spot to place the cart in the future.

It will take approximately eight to 10 days to deliver the carts to all residents. The start date for the new refuse collection system will be January 31, 2011 and residents are asked to begin using the carts on their scheduled pick-up day after the 31st.
