The crude oil in the four tanker cars that were derailed in the CP Rail yard in Estevan around 11 a.m. Thursday had been transloaded into other tank cars as of Friday afternoon May 9, according to a company spokesman .

Ed Greenberg of CP Rail confirmed that the slow speed derailment did not result in any leaks from the tanker cars and the transfer of the oil from the damaged cars that began at 6 a.m. Friday was completed by early afternoon.

The damaged rail cars were then righted and will be moved to a main area of the company's rail yard.

Greenberg said the activity would not affect the normal mainline rail traffic through the city.

"The final stage of the recovery will be track repair, followed by inspection and then the re-opening of the area," he said.

An early evacuation order for a couple of nearby companies on Thursday was removed by Estevan first responder teams after it was confirmed there were no oil leaks or any imminent danger issues.

Greenberg said an investigation into the cause of the incident is underway but it could take some time before that is completed.

"We will look into the cause and what led up to the derailment so we can implement the necessary changes. Safety is still the priority." Greenberg said.
