Pangman board hosts info meeting on Ogema train

Pangman (cpd) - The Pangman Economic Development Board and the Pangman Rec Board sponsored the Southern Prairie Railway information meeting held Nov. 30 at the Community Centre. Guest speaker was Cheryl Generous, CEO of South Prairie Railway. Cheryl presented a slide show with information about the Ogema-based South Prairie's plans. They are planning to have theme trains, including a pioneer train, a "Stargazer" train, pitchfork fondues and train robberies. All proceeds from the train robberies would go to charity. They also hope to rent out the train for private events like weddings.

The train is planned to run on Saturdays and Sundays, and on long weekends on Mondays from May to October. The train will start from Ogema and visit Horizon and Pangman. Their motto is, "Pulling the Past into the Future."

To have the train stop in Pangman, there is a need to build a wheelchair-accessible platform and have some events for the tourists to see, such as the Farmers Market. The train will stop in Pangman for about a half-hour to an hour.

Coffee and doughnuts were served following the question-and-answer period.
The Pangman and District Economic Development Board has a committee comprised of Ed Howse, Kathy Bryson, Merlin Broughton, John Colbow, Chuck Jacques, John Metke, Eileen Tunall and Boyd Towischer to oversee the building of a platform for the train. Their next meeting will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Community Centre.

The Pangman Christmas concert will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 20, starting at 7 p.m. in the school gym. Academic award presentations will be made, Christmas carols will be sung and two plays will be performed by the students. Those attending are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Regina food bank.

The Pangman School held their annual Christmas bazaar on Dec. 3 at the school gym with tables selling their wares. Many raffles were drawn for.

Santa came to Sunnyview Place during the noon hour and presented all residents with a candy bag. After he and his helper Don Allewell went around town to hand out bags to the seniors. After the kids watched a movie, Santa greeted them with goodies also.

The Deep South Personal Care home held their Christmas family supper on Dec. 4. There was entertainment, family pictures taken, and the board presented all the seniors with a gift that was opened with their families. A turkey supper was served.
The Loving Lights fundraiser has begun again. If you would like to donate, forms can be found at the post office and also sent in the mail. The minimum donation is $5 per name. The forms can be dropped off at the Credit Union and post office in Pangman and Ogema. Proceeds will go to the Deep South Personal Care Home.
The Hometown Cafe will be selling 50-50 tickets, with all the proceeds going to different community groups in Pangman. Draws are made each Monday at 9 a.m. The December proceeds will be going to the Pangman Recreation Board to help with their fundraisers.

The January proceeds will go to the school's SRC to help with the expenses of graduation.

The Ladies Auxiliary are selling raffle tickets, with the first prize a Christmas basket with a turkey, and second prize will be a Christmas necklace and earrings made and donated by Kathy Bryson. The basket can be viewed at the Hometown Cafe, and tickets can be purchased there as well. The draw date will be on Monday, Dec. 19.
The Pangman Recreation Board would like to purchase a new TV for the Community Centre. To do this, they are raising money through a raffle, with the first prize a 42-inch HD flatscreen TV, and second prize a $75 gift certificate for Red Lobster. Tickets are available from Rec Board members. The draw will be made when all the tickets are sold.

The Community Centre is available rent for private functions such as birthday parties or weddings. The rent is $60 for any event four hours or longer; shorter events cost $25. If you need a place to hold a meeting, the centre is free for community non-profit group meetings.

The School-Community Council held their meeting on Nov. 28. Their annual sleigh ride is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Community Centre. There will be hot dogs, marshmallows and hot chocolate. Darrell Rowland will bring in his team and sleigh. Lloyd Lillejord will bring in the firepits and Brian Schwindt will possibly bring his team.

On Dec. 14, Wendy Colbow will do crafts at the school. Elementary students can go from 3:30 to 4 p.m., and older students from 5 to 6 p.m. This is free of charge.
The reconfiguration of Pangman School has begun. The elementary grades will move to the high school before the demolition of the elementary end. Plans are for this to be done in January of 2012.

Due to circumstances, Jo's Hair and Body Care cannot do hair from Monday to Saturdays, as Jo has accepted another job, and is also taking EMT training. A Sunday here and there may be possible for hair care.
Christmas Carolling was held on Dec. 11, starting from the Catholic Church; hot chocolate was served afterwards.

Six residents of Sunnyview Place played their weekly five-pin bowling tournament on Dec. 7 with Mary Spooner winning first place for the ladies with 79 points, and Gordon Spooner winning first for the men with 85 points.
