Police warn residents of Grandparent Scam

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of May 23 to 29: *On May 29, police were called to investigate a report of mischief to a parked vehicle. The suspect had thrown a bicycle onto the vehicle. The matter is under investigation.

*On May 29, police were called to investigate a report of mischief to a parked vehicle. The suspect had thrown a bicycle onto the vehicle. The matter is under investigation.

*Police were called to assist in looking for a young male who had not returned home. Shortly after receiving the call the child was located.

*On May 28, police were called to a domestic disturbance and assault. A local Weyburn male was arrested and charged with assault.

*Police were called to investigate a report of trespassers on CPR property. The matter is under investigation.

*On May 27, police were called to investigate a complaint that local youth were getting into a secured City property. The matter is under investigation.

*Police arrested and charged a local male with driving while over .08. He will be appearing in court in July.

*On May 26, police received a complaint of mischief at a local school. The matter is under investigation.

*On May 25, police were called to investigate a theft of a Canon Power Shot Camera from a parked vehicle. The matter is under investigation.

*Police were called to investigate a complaint of threats being posted on a social media internet site. The matter is under investigation.

*Police were called to investigate a report of what's commonly known as the grandparent scam. The matter is under investigation.

*Police were called to a local store to investigate a shoplifting complaint. A local young offender was arrested and charged.

*Police received a complaint regarding harassing phone calls. The matter was settled without further incident.

*On May 23, police received several reports of items being stolen from vehicles. Residents are reminded to not leave valuables in their vehicles and make sure their doors are locked.

*Police were called to investigate a report of a stolen vehicle, the matter is under investigation.

*Police were called to investigate a report of theft of money from a residence. The matter is under investigation.

*Police arrested and charged a female driver with impaired driving and driving while over .08

*During this reporting period 125 occurrences were handled by members of the Weyburn Police Service (WPS). Once again telephone, mail and Internet scams seem to be prevalent.

What's commonly known as the Grandparent Scam has again been reported. In the most recent case a local resident was contacted by a suspect posing as a grandchild. They claim that they are in jail and want bail money sent to them via a money transfer. In another case, an online sales complaint resulted in a local resident being paid for sold merchandise with a counterfeit money order. Residents are reminded to be very cautious and report any suspicious activity to police.

Over the weekend several liquor related traffic tickets were issued and calls involving alcohol were attended. Residents are reminded that if they have consumed any amount of alcohol not to drive a motor vehicle.

Also this past week, several tours of the WPS building and vehicles were given to local children.
