Last year was a busy year for the SARCAN Recycling depot in Weyburn, which was the organization's 40th year in Weyburn.
The depot had increases in the amount of paint and the number of electronics it collected.
SARCAN took in approximately 5,330 litres of liquid paint, not including the paint brought in for free re-use by other customers, a 51.9 per cent increase over last year.
The depot also collected 73,287 kgs (161,570 lbs.) of electronics equipment, a 35.6 per cent increase over the amount of electronics collected last year. More than half of the electronics collected, 46,515 kgs (102,547 lbs.), were televisions and monitors.
With the increase in recycling, the depot has plans to expand its customer receiving area in the coming year to deal with the demand.
Last year the depot also recycled nearly eight million beverage containers, including bottles, cans, and juice containers. SARCAN paid out almost $850,000 in refundable deposits for the containers.
In total the depot handled 28,407 customers last year with each employee processing an average of 3,241 containers per day.
The SARCAN depot is operated by the Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop and employs approximately eight full-time, four part-time and several casual employees.
The Weyburn depot contributes over $1 million annually to the local economy through deposit refunds, employee wages and operational costs.
