Shelter closed due to parvo

The Weyburn Humane Society Shelter will be closed to the public for the next two weeks due to an illness.

The Weyburn Humane Society Shelter will be closed to the public for the next two weeks due to an illness. The shelter unknowingly took in a dog that was diagnosed with parvovirus, or parvo, mandating that the shelter be cleaned and quarantined for two weeks.

Shelter employee Nicole Griffin said the Humane Society was forced to euthanize the diseased dog due to the $1,200 veterinarian bill that it would have cost to cure it. She said that they are concerned about two out of seven dogs who may be showing the symptoms of parvo.

"Symptoms to watch for are lack of hunger, listlessness, bloody diarrhea and vomiting," said Griffin.

Griffin said that parvo is very contagious, especially to young dogs.

Details are still being worked out as to an interim shelter.
