A special time capsule will be opened during Weyburn's centennial, when the class of 1988 meets for a 25-year reunion.

The time capsule was created in 1988 by the graduating class. Classmates who graduated that year from the Weyburn Comp will meet upstairs at the curling rink on Saturday, August 3. Cocktails are at 5:30 p.m., and supper and socializing starts at 6 p.m.

Organizers said they contacted as many people as they can, but some previous students were missed. "I can't even remember what's in there," said Faye Hoium about the time capsule. Hoium is one of the organizers of the '88 reunion. She said other classmates told her they forgot they even made one.

Hoium has planned the reunion with Pam Haupstein, Leanne Alexander, Teresa Lafoy, Pamela Fletcher, Greg Duxbury, Trevor Laird and Terra Little since May of this year. "I guess we're in denial that 25 years was coming up," chuckled Hoium.

Another time capsule was also found, but it is unknown what year it is from. Bob King, reunion organizer for the centennial committee, said they found a big metal box.

"We think it might be the 1912 time capsule," said King. As of our deadline, no details were arranged for opening it.

Many other reunions will be held during Weyburn's centennial, when past residents and their families return to the city.

The Weyburn Collegiate Institute class of 1947 is having a reunion, organized by Isabelle Butters, at the Homecoming Meet and Greet in the Weyburn Curling Rink on Friday, Aug. 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. For more information, contact Isabelle Butters.

Reunions are also planned for the classes of 1953, 1957 and 1958 by Ed and Valerie Dauphinais and Ron Miller.

The Dauphinaises invite all graduates from the 1950s to their '53 and '58 reunions at the Weyburn Curling Club on Friday, August 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. They are currently expecting at least 40 people to attend the reunion.

"We invite all the 50s group so we can recall our past school experiences and renew old friendships and learn about careers and families," said Valerie.

The reunion for the class of 1957 will be held on Friday, August 2 at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. Roughly 30 former classmates and spouses will meet for the chicken, rib and steak supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by socializing in the Vimy Room from 7 to 9 p.m.

Bev Hanson said many members of the class have purchased tickets to the Memory Lane dinner and concert on Saturday night, and were going to try to sit together and visit more.

Bruce Douglas started organizing a reunion for the WCI class of 1963 when he first heard about Weyburn's centennial celebrations with the help of Kathy McFadden and Jean MacKinnon. The class of '63 reunion welcomes anybody who attended WCI.

This particular reunion includes anybody who attended the school from 1956 to 1966. Former classmates can gather at the meet and greet supper, the centennial supper and high school choir performance. Douglas said there are currently 25 respondents and they are expecting more to attend.

Miranda Spencer is organizing a reunion for the class of 1993. The reunion is spread out over three days, from Friday to Sunday, August 2 to 4. A come and go social will be at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall on Friday at 7 p.m.

Former classmates are also encouraged to attend the centennial breakfast on Saturday at the Weyburn Credit Union Community Room from 7:30 to 10 a.m.

There will be a special golf tournament for the '93 class on Saturday at 11 a.m., and that evening there is a dinner and dance at the Captain's Hall. Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. with speeches and dancing to follow. There will be a family picnic in the spray park on Sunday at midday.

The class of '98 reunion will be held Sunday, August 4 at the Weyburn Leisure Centre for some family friendly socializing from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and at Fitzgerald's at 6:30 p.m. for supper and a 90s themed party.

Lorinda Jacobson, who organized the reunion with Amanda Ror, Nicole Giroux and Trent Hamilton, said there is still time to register for the reunion.

All former WCI and WCS students are welcome to visit the WCS on Sunday, August 4 from 2 to 5 p.m. for a tour of the school. Not everything will be accessible, as it is currently under construction, but tours will be given to accessible parts of the school.

"We're hoping to get 1,000 people here, but whether we will or not is unknown," said Bob King, reunion organizer for the centennial committee. "It's going to be a fabulous weekend of reconnecting with people and we've got people coming in from all over Canada and the United States."
