Spiderman had a concussion and Teddy had a broken arm, but they’ll be okay in a few days. Spiderman, Teddy and a host of stuffed toys were part of a session on First Aid for children and their parents at the Tot Spot session on January 26. It was aimed at familiarizing children with medical workers such as ambulance personnel and providing parents with some valuable First Aid information.
Destin Ash, paramedic, and Krista Borgerson, staff member, from Hutch Ambulance visited Tot Spot to make a presentation for parents about choking in children. They explained the First Aid procedures and parents had a chance to practice on models. The Hutch personnel also interacted with the children, demonstrating a variety of basic first aid like applying bandages on toys to familiarize children with these types of medical procedures.
Each child, aided by their parents practiced some first aid on their toy. It was an important learning session for both parents and children, explained Emily Pineda, who facilitates Tot Spot.
The Hutch Ambulance mascot also made a visit to help put the children at ease. Perhaps the highlight of the day was going outdoors to see the ambulance. Ash gave the children a tour of the back of the ambulance, showing them the basic features and each child got a chance to sit up front as well. The Tot Spot is an indoor play space for parents and their children aged five and under located downstairs at St. George’s Catholic Church. It’s a drop-in program that continues to late April. There is no fee. The program runs on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m.
