A number of Weyburn and area businesses are up for provincial business awards, as the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce announced the list of finalists for the 2010 Achievement in Business Excellence Awards (ABEX), with over 60 finalists in 12 award categories. The ABEX Awards dinner will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Delta Regina in Regina.

Three of the local finalists were winners of WEYBEX Awards from the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce in June.

Southern Industrial and Truck, which won as the WEYBEX Business of the Year and New or Expanded Business of the Year, is a finalist for the Growth and Expansion Award.

United Centrifuge, which won the WEYBEX Community Involvement Award, is a finalist for the provincial Community Involvement Award, and is going up against Border Line Feeders of Ceylon.

Border Line Feeders, which has been nominated before for ABEX awards, is also a finalist for the Service Award.

Also, Don Kraft, manager of the Weyburn Co-operative Association, winner of the WEYBEX Business Leader of the Year award, is a finalist now for the ABEX Business Leader of the Year.

In addition, two other members of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce have made the cut for the ABEX.

The Weyburn Inland Terminal is a finalist for the ABEX Marketing Award, while Bar Engineering has been nominated for the Growth and Expansion Award.

"In total, five Weyburn and area businesses will be on the provincial stage at this year's ABEX Awards. This is a testament to the strength of our business community, and we are very proud to have helped these businesses achieve this distinguished recognition," said Jeff Richards, manager of the Weyburn Chamber.

Saskatchewan Chamber CEO Steve McLellan commented, "Saskatchewan is booming. We had a record number of applications come in for this year's awards, over 90, that provided fierce competition in every category. The 2010 ABEX Awards will, no doubt highlight Saskatchewan's innovative and motivated businesses."

The ABEX Awards were established 27 years ago to celebrate the achievement of private sector businesses in Saskatchewan. Since then, they have become the largest private sector business awards in the province, and are open to any private sector business registered to operate in Saskatchewan regardless of size, location or industry.
