Anglers flock to Rafferty Dam for two-day fishing derby

More than 20 teams were entered in this year's tournament.

MIDALE — The annual Rafferty Dam Walleye Tournament featured two days of fishing for the anglers who were out on the water.

More than 20 teams entered the competition, which was held May 24 and 25 on Rafferty, with Mainprize Regional Park serving as the base. Paul Skoczylas and Rene Sehn finished as the top team, as they had a two-day total of 35.06 pounds, with 16.86 pounds the first day and 18.2 the second.

Shane Smith and Trent Dukart were second with a two-day weight of 33.82 pounds. They had the lead after the first day with a total of 18.46 pounds, and then caught fish with a combined weight of 15.36 pounds. They also had the largest fish on Day 1 at 6.16 pounds.

Third place went to Cole Wallin and Kale Nimigeers with a combined weight of 33.56 pounds. Their Day 1 haul was 14.06 pounds and they had the best total for Day 2 at 19.5 pounds, including a 7.26-pound catch.

Nate Smart and Kody Gallipeau were fourth at 32.72 pounds (15.28 pounds on Day 1 and 17.44 pounds on Day 2), and Kurtis Sanguin and Scott Brown were fifth at 31.16 pounds (15.72 and 15.44 pounds).

A registration night took place on May 23. Supper was served after the fishing wrapped up on the 24th and an awards celebration was held after the fishing on May 25.
