ESTEVAN — Kirsten Fornwald says the support for the Prairie Prime Junior Stock Club's first-ever show and sale was "so overwhelming".
The event happened June 27 and 28 at the Estevan Exhibition Association's grounds. The sale occurred the first night, and the other two days featured the show, judging and more.
"It turned out probably better than we could have ever expected. The support of the community and families was just overwhelming. I felt overwhelmed with gratitude this morning," Fornwald told SaskToday after the show wrapped up.
The average sale price was $6.14 per pound for 23 steers. Ryder Mantei had the grand champion steer, which tipped the scales at 1,596 pounds and was also the heaviest animal in the sale. It sold for $6.50 per pound to Mid-City Plumbing and Heating.
Britt Fornwald has the reserve champion steer, which weighed in at 1,503 pounds and sold for $6.00 per pound to Smart Power.
Kirsten Fornwald said the quality of the cattle was "excellent".
"Our members did an excellent job preparing both their steers and their females for the show," she said.
Not included in the average sale price was a charity steer that raised $71,000 for the Creighton Lodge kitchen renovation project. DK Land and Cattle Co., which is owned by Kirsten Fornwald and her husband Dustin, donated the steer.
Kirsten Fornwald said previously the charity steer would be part of the event each year.
The activities started in the morning of June 27 with judging, team grooming, a steer show, and a social and a meet-and-greet with the club members and their steers. After the sale, an appreciation supper was served to the buyers.
Activities on June 28 included an individual grooming competition at 11 a.m., followed by a female cattle show, which included yearling heifers and cow-calf pairs. The conclusion of the show was a showmanship competition for all age divisions.
Britt Fornwald brought the overall champion female, Brenna Fornwald had the reserve champion female and was the top showman, and Casey Brokenshire was the top groomer.
The club was formed earlier this year. Kirsten Fornwald said members are confident is confident this will become an annual event, as the club is already making notes and plans for next year.
