YORKTON – The Yorkton Terriers hosted the Estevan Bruins Saturday evening in the Terriers' home opener at Westland Arena.
It was a foggy evening on the ice and the Terriers were looking to build on the momentum of their win over the Bruins from the previous evening. They picked up a 5-4 win over the Bruins.
Pavel Mckenzie put the Terriers on the board at 3:57 of the first during a power-play effort by the team. The Bruins responded with a power-play goal of their own at 12:13 by Jagjeevan Phangura - his first in the SJHL. Karsten Kruska closed out the period with a shorthanded goal for the Terriers at 18:10.
Only two goals were scored in the second period, both coming by the Terriers. Maddux Nollski hit the target early at the 20-second mark and Greg Nelson put the puck past Bruins' goalie Cam Hrdlicka with 13 seconds remaining.
Early in the third, at 2:48, Kade Runke scored a shorthanded goal for the Bruins. Later, at 14:08, the Bruins would put another past Terriers' netminder Caleb Allen, with the puck coming off the stick of Alex Von Sprecken.
The Terriers responded 43 seconds later on a goal by Aiden Knutson. The Bruins' Alex Blanchard scored on the power play at 18:56 of the period, but the Bruins couldn't muster the tying goal.
Allen was in net for the Terriers, stopping 27 of the 31 shots for the win. Hrdlicka stopped 22 of 26 shots.
The Terriers will host the Weyburn Red Wings at Westland Arena on Sept. 21, while the Bruins next action will be road games at the Nipawin Hawks on Sept. 20 and 21.
