ESTEVAN — In what has become an annual July occurrence, the City of Estevan has issued a news release claiming the water supply is safe to use.
The news release says the city's water treatment plant is currently experiencing a temporary taste and odour issue in the drinking water supply.
"This is a common and naturally-occurring condition during periods of prolonged hot weather, caused by a seasonal algae bloom in the source water," the city said. "These algae blooms can produce harmless compounds, which are responsible for the earthy or musty taste and smell that some residents may notice."
While this may affect the water’s palatability, the city said it remains completely safe to drink and meets all provincial and national drinking water standards. To help accelerate the clearing process, the water treatment plant has opened its flushing line, increasing water movement through the system.
This strategy helps break up the algae bloom and promote quicker turnover of the affected source water.
"We appreciate your patience during this time and want to assure residents that we are closely monitoring water quality, and will continue taking proactive steps to maintain the highest standards of safety and service," the city said.
