WEYBURN — An Estevan man, already facing drug-related charges, will remain in custody after his latest arrest.
Devon William Martell was denied bail July 30 in Weyburn Provincial Court. He had a show-cause hearing two days earlier in Estevan, after which Judge Mitch Miller reserved his decision.
Martell was released from custody on a consent release order July 21 and is alleged to have committed an assault later that day. He was arrested and charged by the Estevan Police Service for assault and violating his release conditions, and has been in custody since July 21.
His previous bail has also been revoked.
A publication ban is in place for the evidence from Martell's July 28 show-cause hearing, and Miller's reasons for denying bail, are protected by a publication ban.
He is scheduled to appear by video Aug. 6 in Carlyle Provincial Court. Martell also has a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 25 and 26, stemming from charges laid in August 2024.
Background: According to information from the Estevan Police Service, Martell was arrested July 6 for possession of methamphetamine under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and violating the terms of his release conditions under the Criminal Code.
Martell was one of four people arrested in Estevan in August 2024 after search warrants were executed at five locations in Estevan. Each was charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine); possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine); trafficking a schedule 1 substance (cocaine); trafficking a schedule 1 substance (methamphetamine); and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
The preliminary hearing Aug. 25-26 will be for Martell and co-accused Jessica Louise Rutter-McKeen.
Another person, Brennan Stephen McKeen, pleaded guilty to charges last month and is to be sentenced in September, while charges against a fourth person have been stayed.
