Suspects in Midale thefts appear in Weyburn court.

WEYBURN — One of the two people charged in connection with recent thefts in Midale has been released with conditions, while another is still in custody.

Gerald Edward Keenatch and Francis John Desjarlais appeared in Weyburn Provincial Court Aug. 5 with a show-cause hearing scheduled to determine if they would receive bail. Keenatch was released with conditions following his appearance, while Desjarlais was remanded in custody.

Both men had their matters adjourned to Aug. 12 in Weyburn.

Background: According to a news release from the Saskatchewan RCMP, members of the Weyburn detachment received several reports early July 26 of break and enters to vehicles and garages in Midale. Items reported as stolen included electronics, tools, cigarettes and change.

The Weyburn RCMP continued to investigate with the assistance of the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft System and Police Dog Services. Later that same day, officers located and arrested two adult males.

As a result of continued investigation, Keenatch, a 28-year-old man from Regina, and Desjarlais, a 27-year-old man from the Kawacatoose First Nation, were each charged with:

  • Six counts of break, enter and commit;
  • Six counts of trespass at night; and
  • One count of wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence.

All charges are under the Criminal Code.

Keenatch is also charged with one count of failing to comply with a release order condition under the Criminal Code.

Keenatch and Desjarlais appeared in Weyburn Provincial Court on July 29.

The initial message from the Saskatchewan Crime Watch Advisory Network noted there were possibly two males and one female who had been stranded in Midale as their vehicle has been abandoned, but the RCMP said afterwards there are no other suspects.
