Estevan Mercury

I've never been a big fan of goodbyes, but here we are. This is my final paper with the Mercury after just over 16 years. It feels very weird to be writing that.

The Southeast Corner Racing Circuit held its first motocross program of the season on Saturday at Trackside MX Park in Estevan. It was originally slated for May 3 but was rescheduled. There were 180 entries.

Estevan's emergency services personnel, and residents, were able to breath a sigh of relief Thursday after a train derailment was resolved without major incident or injury. The derailment, which occurred Thursday at around 11 a.m.

As work continues on the heavy-truck bypass around the northern outskirts of Estevan, the City is also looking to review and revise which roads within city limits are going to continue accepting heavy trucks in the future.

The Estevan Tarpon Energy Big Dogs took it on the chin over the weekend, as a pair of losses dropped them to a 1-3 record in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League.

Fifty teams hit the water and more than 250 fish were caught, but it was a different number that mattered most on Saturday. When it was all over, the team of Carl and Coby Humphreys weighed in at a total of 14.

It's not an Estevan-only problem, but it's one that this city certainly isn't immune to. Civic pride is a sense of duty, an attitude that everyone in a community has a stake in the well being of the streets, the buildings and the people.

This week I'm really worried about Montreal. I know I shouldn't be. I think that city will do just fine without my input. They have federal governments that keep giving them stuff, but still, I kind of grieve for the city.

The 2014 camping season will be back to normal in the Estevan area as Woodlawn Regional Park will welcome campers with the opening of all sites this weekend.

This is Saskatchewan, after all, so I won't tempt the fates by proclaiming the snow and wintery weather have left us for good. Let's just point to the forecast instead.
