It's a story heard far too often. Fire breaks out in home, family inside is unable to get out and is killed. Fortunately this story had a much happier ending.

It was the issue that would not die. On at least three different occasions, a motion to lower the speed limit in Estevan's residential areas from 50 km/h to 40 k/h had come before city council and on each occasion the motion was voted down.

We knew early on in 2012 that Estevan would have a new mayor. What we didn't know was who would replace Gary St. Onge, the man who'd held the position since 2005.

This week, on Dec. 21, the world is supposed to end. At least, that's what some people think the Mayans predicted. I'm pretty confident it won't, but precisely six months earlier, on June 21, my world nearly ended.

Maybe there is a lot being done, but from an outsider looking in, it appears that nobody is trying to make any changes to limit the shootings that take place far too frequently south of the border.
