As part of the Estevan Arts Council’s commitment to providing quality educational programing to the community, the organization held its annual Art Action Camp from Feb. 20 to 22 at the Estevan Leisure Centre.

There were approximately 30 children in attendance and Maria Ibarra was leading a plasticine art class that youths really enjoyed.

The event also included a short yoga class for the kids and games. The children went swimming in the afternoon.

Ibarra said plasticine art is intended for a shadow box because the art itself is not only fragile but also three-dimensional. As such it isn’t the type of thing you just hang on a wall, it needs to be protected.

Paining the insides of a shadow box with the same theme of the art turns its display frame into art itself.

The arts council has encountered some budget cuts recently but that did not stop them from getting the right materials to provide the kids with a good time.

The council is planning to continue with its programming and attendee Chloe Mantei is happy about that. She mentioned that she and her friends had a lot of fun being given the opportunity to spend a day just making art.

Ibarra had some of her own plasticine art examples on display for the children to look at in shadow boxes. She said with enough practice the students can get up to her level of artistic expression using plasticine.

The examples Ibarra had on display were actually a different type of plasticine art than what the kids were doing. Her artwork was assembled with tiny round pieces of plasticine strung together with paper-thin plasticine ropes.

Anyone who interested in getting their kids involved with the Arts Council is encouraged to contact the office.
