The Estevan Arts Council was able to provide one of their new classes to younger children on March 8, with lessons on paper mâché.
The art form has long been a great way to have fun with art and make some really interesting artwork. The arts council was teaching children how to make tabletop artwork using half a plastic milk jug and cardboard.
There were approximately 12 children in attendance and teacher Maria Ibarra was happy with the turnout. She said the arts council is experimenting with different days to get the greatest number of people to come out and enjoy art.
“Yes this is part of a larger education program. The idea is to have more art classes. For example, this month we are working on paper mâché and next month it is going to be acrylic paint and the month after that will be something different,” said Ibarra.
“We want to have art classes, but we want to have different art classes each month so we keep the kids engaged and they can keep learning,” she added.
The first class was on March 8 and the sessions will continue to run on Thursdays. Those interested are encouraged to contact the arts council’s office.
“This is the second time while I have been with the arts council that we have used plasticine in class to help kids learn about art,” said Ibarra.
The arts council is looking forward to the warm weather because they want to have some arts classes outside.
“If the weather is going to be OK we have to enjoy the weather outside. I am still preparing the classes for the summer time,” said Ibarra. “There are lots of crafts that people can do outside and we can’t wait for the weather to get here.”
