Celebrate the Multicultural Flavour of Weyburn with the Weyburn & District Multicultural Council's 'Folkarama' on March 23 at McKenna Hall. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. and a silver collection will be taken for admission.
The event will include music and various displays by cultural groups and support groups. Coffee, tea and juice will be available and there will also be various hot ethnic foods for sale.
The formal program begins at 1:00 and will run until 4:00 p.m. Performances include musical talent as well as dancers.
Sandra Marcotte of the Weyburn Multicultural Council noted that the event should have a good deal of entertainment. Although some performers are still being confirmed, Marcotte noted that Onello Bahingawan and the Ukranian Dance Club are scheduled to perform.
Display tables will include both the history of Weyburn as well as some of the other cultural groups and support services available in the area, such as the Weyburn Newcomer Advocacy Committee and Southeast Newcomers' Services out of Estevan.
A raffle will be held, with plenty of great prizes to be won.
"We encourage people to come and listen to some entertainment and learn a bit about some of the different groups and services that are in Weyburn," said Marcotte.
The Multicultural Council's motto of 'peace through a rainbow of cultures' reflects the values the group upholds, of diversity through sharing, not discrimination through ignorance.
March 21 is the United Nation's International Day for the Elimination of Racism, so Folkarama is typically held at the same time of year. Marcotte noted that this date is chosen to make people aware of discrimination - that it happens everywhere, including in our own city.
"We are hoping we can highlight the fact that Weyburn has a changing face and it is something to be embraced," she said. "What we can do is enjoy the fact that we have many similarities but we can also celebrate and learn from the differences that we all have."
