Young people in the Estevan area expressed their support for Canada’s veterans through the nationwide poster, poems and essay contest offered by the Royal Canadian Legion.
The Estevan Legion branch handed out medals, certificates and cash prizes on April 26 to students who had top three finishes for their age groups at their schools. Black-and-white and colour posters were designed and the poems and essays were written prior to Remembrance Day.
Those who finished first in their school for their age group and their artistic discipline moved onto the zone level.
At the zone competition, Autumn Wiens (senior essay), Kaitlin Milbrandt (junior poster), Daya Burt (black and white poster) and Rachel Duncan (primary poster) finished first in their respective categories.
MaryAnn McDiarmid (senior black and white poster), Myranda Whynot (senior colour poster), Caitlyn Ganson (intermediate essay) and Katie Ostrander (junior poem) had second place finishes. Dana Miquiabas earned a third place finish in intermediate colour poster.
At the zone level, Milbrandt finished first for her junior poster. Wiens and Duncan took second place finishes for their entries. Burt had a third place finish.
Milbrandt’s poster also took first place in the provincial competition, and her entry advanced to nationals.
A total of 191 local entries were received.
