The Estevan Art Gallery and Museum (EAGM) has a new addition to its north exterior wall.
A tile mural was installed on Tuesday. The mural, which was created last month, pays tribute to the late Ida Petterson, who was Estevan’s mayor from 1970 to 1976, and was the first female mayor of a Saskatchewan city.
She was also a strong advocate for the construction of the Estevan National Exhibition Centre (now the EAGM).
The mural also includes several nods towards life and culture in Estevan, including a large pump jack and an agricultural landscape in the background.
A total of 579 tiles are included in the mural. About a third of them were completed by Lewis Lavoie of Mural Mosaic. The remainder were painted by local school children, community leaders and EAGM supporters on May 12 and 13.
The mural is one of 150 from across the country that will be completed through Mural Mosaic’s Canada 150 celebrations.
