Members of Crocus Quilters of Weyburn are busy preparing for their Spring Bouquet of Quilts V which will take place May 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. and May 10, 10 to 4 p.m. at the Weyburn Curling Rink. More than 100 quilts will be on display together with special quilts made by Vi Mitchell and Lydia Milleker, the featured quilters for this show.
Those who attend will have a chance to see works of art together with practical household items. The craft of quilting has changed due to new techniques but the essentials are still layers of fabric held together with stitching, both hand and machine.
Shirley Mathieson from Moose Jaw, an avid quilter of both traditional and art forms, is presenting a trunk show Friday evening. Shirley uses fabric and embellishments to create unique and unusual works. Her passion is hand dyed and painted fabric that she prepares herself and then uses her sewing machine to "paint" with thread to create an art piece. She has had one of her pieces juried into the national quilt competition Quilt Canada 2014. But Shirley has not forgotten the basics of quilting as she has made many quilts for charity too. Crocus Guild is very pleased to showcase Shirley's works to inspire and delight those who attend.
Demonstrations will be held to keep show goers up to date with new how-to and tools. Quilters will be able to take in information about new sewing machines, wet felting, using 10 inch layer cake fabric bundles, and seaming a backing. They may also find some answers to some sewing problems and how to do a traditional block known as the Dresden plate from teachers who are coming to share their skills from neighbouring towns in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Times will be posted for these demonstrations at the entry to the show.
Show goers will have the opportunity to vote for the People's Choice Award after they view the quilts. The winner will be presented with a Rosette from the Canadian Quilters Association at 4pm by show chair Marg Stewart.
