Former North Portal resident Ross King has been long-listed for the RBC Taylor Prize, which is one of Canada’s most prestigious non-fiction literature awards.

King, a prominent art history author who now resides in England, has been recognized for his most recent work, Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of Water Lilies.

A total of 12 books are on the long list.

King has been nominated for numerous national awards during his career, and is a two-time recipient of the Governor General’s Award for English language non-fiction writing. He has been nominated for the Taylor Prize on multiple occasions.

The shortlist will be announced at a news conference on Jan. 11, 2017, and the winner will be revealed at a gala luncheon on March 6.

John English, Ann MacMillan and Colin McAdam were the jurors who determined the long list. They read 101 books written by Canadian authors.

The RBC Taylor Prize recognizes excellence in Canadian non-fiction writing and emphasizes the development of the careers of the authors it celebrates. Established in 1998 by the trustees of the Charles Taylor Foundation, 2017 marks the 16th awarding of the RBC Taylor Prize, which commemorates Taylor's pursuit of excellence in literary non-fiction.

Each author on the short-list will receive $2,000, and the prize winner will receive $25,000.
