The Royal Reds of Weyburn celebrated their 15th anniversary during their monthly get together at Captain's Hall on Friday.
In January 2005, Lucy Owens and Joyce Kellett came up with the idea to form a Red Hat Club in Weyburn. To start, they each invited three or four of their friends to join them for lunch at the Legion the next month on February 5th. However, the word spread of the new club and by the time the first lunch came, 45 ladies ladies were expected to attend.
It was at that lunch that the group decided on the name The Royal Reds of Weyburn and that they would meet for lunch on the first Friday of each month, which has continued to this day. The club grew quickly that year and soon there were 180 members.
According to the Red Hat Society, the group needed to have a Queen so each year they elected a new Queen. After years of this, the club decided to discontinue the reigning of a new Queen and now the lunches are organized by a committee of five or six members.
As of March 2020, the club has approximately 95 members from in and around Weyburn. The club is very open to welcoming new members and there is no fee to join the club; members just have to pay for the meal for each lunch they attend.
