The 4-H Regional Show and Sale, co-ordinated by the Estevan Rotary Club was held on the Estevan Exhibition grounds on the evening of July 5 with three regional 4-H beef clubs in attendance along with about 100 spectators and a number of potential buyers who would be bidding on club steers later that evening.
A total of 39 steers were placed on the auction block including the 1,411 pound grand champion owned by Emily Geisel of the Benson 4-H Beef Club and the reserve champion steer owned and raised by Cooper Brokenshire from the Outram-Madigan 4-H Beef Club that weighed in at well over 1,300 pounds.
The winners of the various competitions were announced and the young people from the trio of clubs who had captured awards, moved into the centre of the ring to accept their awards that came in a variety of scholarships, cash, trophies, belt buckles and banners.
The Cloverbuds were the first up, the youngest members of the 4-H movement, and they were recognized by donors Chad and Crystal Ross.
The championship beef prizes were next up with the grand champion female cow being presented to Casie Brokenshire while the reserve champion title was owned by Emily Geisel, who also showed the grand champion steer. She also laid claim to the champion continuation female while Casie picked up the award for reserve champion continuation female.
The champion yearling heifer award also went to Casie while the reserve champion yearling heifer title was claimed by Cooper Brokenshire.
Cooper Brokenshire owned and showed the reserve champion steer.
The best home grown steer award went to Cooper who also claimed first place for the top four home grown steers.
When it came to a few club awards, the Outram-Madigan team won the team grooming award.
In the judging category the awards went to Keaton Walter for the cloverbud class; Casie Brokenshire for juniors; Cooper Brokenshire for intermediate and Jordan Walter for seniors.
The high individual judge for oral reasoning was Brenden Lishka for the cloverbuds; Casie Brokenshire for juniors, Cooper Brokenshire and Jordan Walter for intermediate and senior members, respectively. Jordan then captured the $500 prize for the best individual oral judge overall.
The junior showmanship title went to Casie and the intermediate showmanship award was claimed by Cooper while Jordan picked up the senior showmanship prize. The overall showmanship prize was presented to Cooper.
The grand aggregatge showmanship buckle went to Cooper and the top individual judge award was claimed by Jordan.
The Benson 4-H Beef Club captured the top prize for group of five.
Other awards were handed out for the 4-H motto adherence, the Estevan Exhibition scholarship and best kept stalls.
The clubs also presented a gift to long-time volunteer Darwin Dukart for his tireless physical contributions leading up to and during the four days of club achievement days on the exhibition grounds that preceded the awards and auction sale.
