The Benson 4-H Beef Club conducted a bake sale in conjunction with their fundraising barbecue on May 7. The results were very encouraging, said club members. The event was staged at the Western Horse Unlimited sale. The members then voted in favour of donating the proceeds from the barbecue and bake sale to the Hillcrest School’s Breakfast Club program.
The Lord of the Ring junior stock show was held the following week (May 15) with several members participating in the program. Congratulations were extended to club member Emily Geisel for taking home the Grand Champion Steer Award. Club leaders reported that all Benson team members did a great job in their presentations.
The month had started off with a Demonstration Day at the Lila Hale farm where members spent the afternoon learning about grooming and clipping techniques. A big thank you was extended to guest presenter Josh Lasby who showed the members the dos and don’ts of grooming animals for the show ring. After picking up the information from Josh, the members said they were able to try the new grooming tips on steers.
Katelynn Tedford presented her final speech as a Benson 4-H Beef Club member in the latter part of May, since she will be graduating from the program this summer.
The club then went through a questionnaire session before settling in for a delicious barbecue supper.
The club members noted they are now gearing up for their big fundraiser of the year which will be providing the barbecue at the upcoming Macks Auction consignment sale scheduled for June 18 at the Estevan Motor Speedway. The proceeds from this effort, the members agreed, will be donated to the Saskatchewan Summer Games committee. The fundraising will include a pie auction and the proceeds from that event will be presented to a former Benson 4-H Beef Club member Nolan Haukeness, and his wife Jenine, who were victims of the devastating forest fire that spread through various sections of Fort McMurray earlier this spring, which destroyed their home in the process.
For the remainder of the month, the club members said they will preparing for their Achievement Day which is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on July 3 and so they will be paying even more attention to their grooming, judging and showmanship skills.
