Benson hit by major storm

The Village of Benson is in clean up mode after a major storm Friday morning.At approximately 2 a.m., an intense storm that included heavy winds and rain hit the community of 200 and left a trail of damage in its wake.

The Village of Benson is in clean up mode after a major storm Friday morning.At approximately 2 a.m., an intense storm that included heavy winds and rain hit the community of 200 and left a trail of damage in its wake.A number of trees were either snapped in half or torn out at the roots. A pair of grain bins were thrown by the wind with one striking a home before coming to rest in the family's backyard. Another home lost its garage.According to reports, a plow wind was responsible for the damage. However eyewitnesses claim a tornado was also spotted in the area. "The water in the ditch in front of our house was sucked straight up into the air," said Roy Humphries who added that the storm lasted roughly 90 seconds.No injuries were reported. A number of homes lost power and SaskPower crews were on the scene Friday morning attempting to restore it.For more on the storm please see Wednesday's edition of the Estevan Mercury.
