Byelection in Rocanville this fall

Nomination papers accepted until Sept. 9.

A byelection to fill a seat on Rocanville council will be held Oct. 21.

ROCANVILLE — October will see a byelection in Rocanville as one of the current councillors is stepping down.

During last week’s regular meeting of Rocanville town council, setting a by-election date was listed as a new business item.

“One of our councillors — Kelsey Selby — is now the pool manager, so she’s no longer eligible to be on council, so we’re going to run a byelection,” Administrator Tanya Strandlund confirmed.

Selby joined council during the most recent municipal election on Nov. 13, 2024.

Nomination papers for those interested in running for the position are due by 4 p.m. on Sept. 9, with the by-election to be held at the town office on Oct. 21.

Approvals by council

Council approved a quote to pour two concrete pads in town this fall.

“We got two quotes, and we approved the cheaper one,” Strandlund said.

Copper Ridge Construction won the bids with the quote for the first pad coming in at $1,824 plus taxes, and the second, much larger pad quoted at $11,128 plus taxes.

A building permit for a deck addition to 305 Fort Street also received the thumbs-up from council.

“That was approved pending our residential inspector doing a quick review to make sure that all is in compliance,” Strandlund said.

Lucky Lottery early bird draw coming up, pool progress going well

From the Recreation report, the annual Rocanville Lucky Lottery is in full swing with a keen drive to sell tickets.

“The early bird draw is scheduled for September 10, so we’re really pushing people to buy their tickets,” Strandlund said. “All the money goes back into the community. And you can win $100,000 — who doesn’t want $100,000?!”

Proceeds raised from the Lucky Lotto support recreational groups and facilities in Rocanville. Last year, $55,000 was distributed to local groups — up $20,000 from 2023.

Facility sponsorship packages will also be going out in September, giving businesses the opportunity to decide what facilities or signage they’d like to sponsor.

Speaking of facilities, Strandlund is quite excited to see the progress at the new pool, which, after a recent donation of $50,000 from Universe Satellite in Rocanville, is now known as the Universe Satellite Aquatic Centre.

“It’s so exciting — things are happening! Lifeguards have been applying; we’re always interested in more resumes,” she said. “It’s all that finalization stuff, we have to epoxy the floors; it’s the little things. It’s getting so close and exciting!”
